The Wide World of Pearls, Our 51st Issue: Tantalizing Tahitians
This fabulous lot of AAA quality Tahitian pearls came straight from the pearl farms of Rikitea.
The large, mixed lot contained colorful Tahitians ranging in size from 9.0-13.0mm, which Kevin Canning used to create a TON of pearl necklaces just for Pearls of Joy.
For centuries the black pearl has captivated pearl collectors and treasure hunters alike. And up until recently a strand of exotic black pearls could fetch $150,000+. Thankfully today consumers have several options if they wish to wear these mysterious gems.
Technically there are three types of black pearls:
- Black Akoya Pearls (treated)
- Black Freshwater Pearls (treated)
- Black Tahitian Pearls* (naturally black)
Black Tahitian Pearls are the only natural black pearl.
How Are Black Pearls Made?
Depending on the type of pearl, black pearls are either created using treatments (dyes, irradiation) or in the case of Tahitian pearls, the black-lipped Pinctada margaritifera is responsible for the mysterious dark coloration.
Interestingly the color of pearl produced is influenced by the host oysters shell color. If the inside if the shell displays greens or blues, these colors are likely to show up in the pearl. However Mother Nature is still charge and there are no guarantees in pearl farming. Which is what makes the rarest colors so valuable.
18″ Baroque Tahitian Pearl Necklace: 8.1-10.4mm AAA
These exotic Tahitian pearls hail from the warm tropical atolls of Tuamotu and Gambier Islands, part of French Polynesia. Each pearl in this strand was grown for at least two seasons (minimum of 18-24 months). While most “discount” strands are only grown one season. The extra time in the water is what gives these pearls exceptionally thick nacre and a deep three-dimensional luster.
Because of our founder’s direct contacts in French Polynesia, we’re able to offer this strand of pearls for 1/5th the price of traditional luxury retailers — without sacrificing quality, luster or color.
This strand is a Multi-Color Tahitian, with a mix of light and dark body colors with silver, silver-blue, green and dark green and rich peacock overtones. The pearls have high luster and very, very light blemishes.
